Lakedaimon / Sparta

Lakedaimonian coinage of the 40s and 30s BC

Estimate: CHF 550.00

Tetrachalkon (AE, 5.25 g, 22 mm, 7), in the name of L. Sempronius Atratinus, c. 39. Similar to the last but, on the reverse, to left and right, - Cf. Grunauer XVI, 9 (and XVII, 118 for the magistrate). RPC 1101 var. Unpublished and apparently unique. Dark brownish-green patina. Good fine.

Ex Rauch 22, March 1978, 1080. The appearance of this coin, and the next, requires a revision of Grunauer’s list of issues as it appears on p. 37. It is possible that supporters of Atratinus produced the three known issues bearing his portrait in rapid succession in order to honor him as a benefactor.
